Diff function with attributes containing OLE objects

Hi All

I wanted to use the diff function with attributes containing OLE objects but it seems that OLE objects are missing in the result !!!

Does this function works with OLE objects

Thanks and regards

"diff" is for raw text.

Even for simple rich-text, I wonder how you would display the difference between a "word" that is underlined and italicized with the same "word" that is struckout and bolded. Add "yellow" and "Courier New" to the mix ...

"diff" cannot handle lots of data; my old notes say "10,000 tokens" or realistic size of "5k". All OLEs (as far as I know) are far larger than 5k.

If your "diff" is actually returning some valid data, then I suspect you are doing this:

  • bufFrom = o."OldAttr"
  • bufTo = o."NewAttr"

In which case you ARE using raw text and no surprise "diff" isn't seeing the OLE at all.

Also, OLE diagrams have "wasted" space inside which gets populated by whatever is in memory at that location and time. Thus, for an attr with an OLE:

string Source = richTextWithOle(o."SourceAttr")
o."CopiedAttr" = richText(Source)
string Copied = richTextWithOle(o."CopiedAttr")
if (Source == Copied) then Louie is wrong.

Maybe some clever dude can plow through the gobbly-gook of the OLE and find some sort of last-modified-date-and-time.

Thanks for your reply...

What I want to do is to keep my OLE objects in the result of the Diff. I don't want to make a diff on OLE object

I would like to compare only the text from 2 "Object Text" keeping inserted OLE objects (Word or jpeg) in the result.

But I understand it is not possible if the diff is done for raw text.

In the attached file, I would like to keep my OLE object in the "Wording after" column

It's been a couple years since this thread had activity and I wondered if anyone has any new approaches to this problem or if any new functionality in DXL provides a solution?

To restate the situation: I need to compare the contents of an object attribute to another object attribute. The redlined result of the comparison must go in a separate attribute. This is repeated for each object in the view. It is important that any OLEs and Pictures are retained (if not intentionally deleted) so that the comparison doesn't give the impression that the OLE or Picture was deleted when it was not!

Thanks in advance!
